Reporting to the VP of Development, this management position has primary responsibility for coordinating and driving the daily activities and processes of the Technology Development group consisting of Development, Research and Quality Assurance.
The position requires dedication to producing high-quality output and proactive involvement in the successful delivery of applications; on time, on budget, on function and through coordination with the Chief Architect and Director of Research. The successful Deputy Director will possess strong management, leadership, and technical skills, have experience managing the evaluation of enterprise-class systems and software, and will have a proven background with Microsoft and competing technologies. Frequent direct contact with software development, quality assurance and research staff, as well as business owners is required.
This individual should understand the increasingly complex technical environment within which industries such as media must integrate. A keen interest in seeking out new technology which helps to innovate, and the ability to drive innovation within the development organization are essential.
Responsibilities:
• Assists organization’s directors in the identification of development, research and testing dependencies across the teams and facilitates their resolution.
• Assists and coordinates release planning and scheduling between Release Manager and Development
• Drives implementation of standard development and testing practices
• Participate in and coordinates early phases of development lifecycle when necessary, including effort estimates, solution brainstorming, creation of solution
architecture diagrams and communication of same within and outside Development
• Participates in capital and operating budget processes
• Evaluates development processes for efficiencies and implements quality improvement activities when necessary
• Provides strategic and technical leadership to the development organization when appropriate
• Has an in-depth knowledge of the principles, theories, practices and techniques for managing the activities related to application development projects
• Works closely with various business unit and customer stakeholders, as well as the development organization, to define, develop, track and evolve technology
roadmaps
• Suggests methods for improving development lifecycle processes leading to rapid solution delivery
• Effectively evaluates and communicates costs and benefits of new technologies
• Researches new technologies specific to a problem space, evaluates technical architecture, and creates summary reports Recommends direction to both the
development group and the business owners based on an evaluation
• Evaluates vendors and their products – judge build vs. buy scenarios
Qualifications:
• Proven leadership skills of cross functional teams is a must
• Structured thinker with well planned approach and ability to prioritize
• Must be a self starter with outstanding work ethic and excellent communication skills Understanding of the software as a service model (SAAS)
• Understanding of Service Oriented Architecture, and its’ advantages / disadvantages
• In-depth knowledge of Object-Oriented and Component-Based Design, Design Patterns, Analysis, and Architecture
• Experience communicating and negotiating at all levels of a software development organization
• Superior performance in all phases of software/systems development and integration management
• Working knowledge of multi process, multi threaded software
• Working knowledge of messaging middleware such as MSMQ/MQSeries, BizTalk, etc
• Web Services, Web, and N-Tier architecture experience
• C#, .Net Framework, Compact Framework, ADO.NET, and ASP.NET or equivalent Java platform experience
• Solid experience with the development and architecture of online portal and destination sites, specifically e-commerce
• SQL Server and competing relational databases experience
• BS in Computer Science with 10+ years of software management experience or equivalent industry and technology experience
• Knowledge of the News Media industry is a plus
